Salt Lick

The ingredients in a cattle salt lick can vary depending on the purpose of the lick and the specific nutritional needs of the cattle. However, most salt licks are made up of the following key ingredients:
1. Salt (Sodium Chloride)
-
The primary ingredient, essential for maintaining electrolyte balance and supporting hydration.
2. Trace Minerals
These are added to support overall health, reproduction, and immunity:
-
Calcium: For bone strength and milk production.
-
Phosphorus: For energy metabolism and bone development.
-
Magnesium: To prevent grass tetany.
-
Potassium: For muscle function and stress management.
-
Zinc: For hoof health and immune system support.
-
Copper: To support immune function and coat health.
-
Selenium: For antioxidant properties and preventing white muscle disease.
-
Iodine: To support thyroid function.
3. Vitamins (Optional)
-
Vitamin A: For vision and immune function.
-
Vitamin D: For calcium and phosphorus absorption.
-
Vitamin E: For muscle and nerve health.
4. Additives (Optional)
-
Molasses: For palatability and energy.
-
Flavors or binders: To enhance taste and ensure the block holds its shape.
-
Medications: Such as dewormers or ionophores for parasite control or improved feed efficiency.
Salt licks are tailored for specific purposes like breeding, weight gain, or overcoming deficiencies in grazing. It’s important to match the composition of the salt lick to the cattle’s diet and regional soil deficiencies.
